Glenna's Journey

Glenna began studying piano when she was seven, and had earned her Grade 8 through the Royal Conservatory of Music by the time she was fourteen. In the local band program, she played French horn, trumpet, or snare drum, as needed, and she still plays in the Arcola Community Band. However, she always loved the harp, and as soon as she had the opportunity, she focused on the harp as her primary instrument.

When she graduated from high school, Glenna faced the difficult choice of pursuing a career in music or in engineering. She decided to go with engineering as her primary occupation. As an Industrial Systems Engineer, Glenna, P.Eng. has held management positions and developed significant process improvements in several companies.

Glenna continued to work on music as much as she could through her education and career. Her first public harp performance was at a relative's wedding. After that, she started getting more and more requests. That was many years ago. Now, Glenna plays regularly for a wide variety of events. She often plays with flautist and composer, Laura Pettigrew.

Glenna continues to pursue a diverse range of interests. She and her husband, Blair Flavel, have now started a company, Flaveart

F.A.Q.

  • Do you have to tune every time you play?

Like most musical instruments, every time a harp is moved or the temperature changes significantly, it should be re-tuned.

  • How long does it take to set up?

I like to have at least half an hour before I play. If there will be other events immediately preceding my performance, it is best if I have an opportunity to set up in advance.

  • Do you play for outdoor events?

I do, but only in very good weather conditions. Because temperature affects tuning, a shade cover is helpful on hot, sunny days. I can supply a tent. Wind can vibrate harp strings that are not being played, and cause problems with music on a stand. As long as there is no danger to the harp itself (rain, extreme temperatures or strong winds), I can be tolerant if you are!

  • What sound system equipment do you need?

Unless you have a very large venue, I come equipped. I have a small harp amplifier and a microphone built for the harp. As long as there is an electrical outlet nearby, that is all that I need. If you do not have access to electricity, I can even bring a power source, but please advise me in advance.

  • What type of chair do you need?

I usually travel with a small black stool, which is barely visible when I play. If you want me to use your specific chair, it must have no arms, and the seat should be approximately 17 to 18 inches from the floor.

  • How much space do you need?

Ideally, I should have five feet by five feet of space, and no significant traffic around me. However, if that is not possible, we can discuss your particular situation.

  • How much advance notice do you need for booking?

I take bookings on a first-come, first-served basis. Sometimes I get bookings up to a year in advance, and sometimes I am able to squeeze someone in a week in advance. Of course, I am more likely to be able to accommodate your request if you book several months in advance.

  • What do you charge?

My standard rates are $300 minimum charge for up to one hour of performance. Each additional hour is $100.

  • What do you normally play at a wedding?

For most weddings, I play approximately 20 to 30 minutes prior to the service (the Prelude), the Processional, Signing of the Register, and Recessional. Most ask that I choose the music for the Prelude, and they select particular music for the rest. If the wedding party does not immediately leave the venue, some couples ask that I play a few more pieces after the service (the Postlude).

  • Do you attend wedding rehearsals?

If I do not have conflicting bookings, I try to attend rehearsals. I do not bring my harp, but I do like to see the layout, timing, and signals. I generally bring a recording of the Processional, so that everyone becomes familiar and comfortable with the music as they walk. If I cannot attend, I recommend that someone else bring a recording to the rehearsal.

  • For what other types of events do you play?

I have played for art shows, for Robbie Burns nights, in hospitals, at funerals, at school concerts, in coffee shops, and at many other events. I welcome new ideas!

  • Will you travel?

Yes. If travel expenses are covered, I will travel within reasonable driving distances of Regina.
